Bristlecone Pine Forest

Bristlecone Pines are the oldest living thing anywhere on earth - up to five millennium.  This forest is located in the White Mountains which are just east of the Sierra Nevada mountains.     These ancient  trees are located at the crest of the mountains.  The Forest Service road begins at California route 168 near the town of Big Pine.  The also provides the superb panorama of the Sierra Nevada peaks.  Big Pine is a small city on US 395.   Still further east on Route 168, you get to travel through a deep lava canyon
