California Coast Route 1 

The mid California coast is both wild and beautiful.  However, this road is very unstable north of Kirk Creek Campground and we recommend that you limit your travel between San Simeon and this campground.  There is no improved road that exits CA1 so your trip should begin and end at the southern end.  Close to San Simeon is an observation point where you can view a colony of Elephant Seals.  The highway  hugs the coast and you will marvel at the views of the cliffs and sea.   In spring, take time to view the flowers which are exquisite.
