Well before the Internet and before the telephone and before the post office, how did messages get from person to person. Painted Rock Historic Site captures how many communicated thousands of years ago. On a seemingly unremarkable pile of rocks are signs that represent the unending quest for folks to tell stories to one another. Each of this extensive collection of petrographs must of taken hours to create.

Painted Rock is west of Phoenix not far from I8 (look for the sign to Painted Rock). Gila Bend is the closest town and there are a number of fast food restaurants there. Painted Rock has both a picnic area and camping sites. If you want to over night at a hotel, we suggest doing so in the Phoenix area.
