Petrified Forest

The Petrified Forest is the only National Park with an Interstate Highway running through it.  If you are anywhere on Arizona's I40, you need to make a trip through this park.  There are two distinct areas within the park.  The first is the painted desert toward the north and the other is the petrified trees that are more to the south.  There are a few locations where both intersect.  There is actually a lot of petrified wood.  In the park, it remains located naturally however ranchers in the surrounding area have mined tons of the stuff and have there finds for sale in the Holbrook.

There are many services along I40. We recommend the Butterfield Steakhouse in the little town of Holbrook. Butterfield has a charming old west decor and our steak was as great as you can find anywhere.
